Hello Everyone!
I just wanted to start a discussion on last nights field trip. I thought that is was a great yet hectic experiance!! I loved the idea of the next step of the project to put the books to Sign. I think that next semester I am going to look into volenteering twice a month on a Friday. What did everyone else thing oflast night?

I agree, I thought it was a great experience, I wish there would have been less people though because I feel like we would have gotten a lot more done. Also, Prof. White brought up the fact that maybe the books will not encourage the students to better themselves. That it will keep the students on the same level. I felt the same exact way. When the lady was talking about the books I was thinking that some kids should be on higher level books. I think that they should probably have different age levels and more difficult books.
I agree with you Tarah...different ages need more difficult books. I also like the ideas Debbie had on going further with the project. I felt I didn't get much done because when I finally got on a one task job it was time to leave.
Great points, ladies!!! I LOVE the fact that you have high expectations, want to make sure students have challenging material and are focused on what is best for children.
We want to make sure we think about kids at ALL levels. Some of the children will be at the level where initially they won't be answering COMPREHENSION questions at all. Think about when you sit down to read with a two or three year old. It will be great if they can IDENTIFY a picture or a color in the book. So, the basic questions will be wonderful as starters.
The ten questions are for parents, grandparents, etc. to get started. Teachers can certainly move on to higher order thinking.
The project is geared towards preschool and elementary children, initially, I THINK. There are 1000 books in the project. We didn't see them all.
When we discussed the stations and the options for your work on Monday we had no idea the number of other volunteers who would come. All of those stations and centers would have been available for our use. I accept the responsibility for not planning it better when we could have had the Center solely to ourselves.
I think all of us still had a great learning experience and we all knew what the stations were so I dont think it was that big of a deal I just wish that we would have had more time at our stations. I think it was a great experience regardless. Oh, and I learned how to read some big words!!!!! :) haha
The planning I feel was on target. We got to see how the system worked and how it was benificial to the student/children. I also wish we would have had more time to help. I just feel Debbie may have been overwhelmed because there were so many of us. I also wanted to bring a book to everyones attention. I Love My Mommy Because. I read this while organizing and I loved it. Try and read it if you can.
I agree as well!! It was awsome. I wish it was closer to home for me, but I am sure I can find a way to utilize the resources it provides. I had put a book on powerpoint for my ELE 445 class. I did not think about sound. I will have to go back and try it.
just wanted to say, i had an awesome time modding mice:}
I thought last night was a great experience for all of us. I plan to be a special ed teacher, but I had never seen adaptations in real life like that before. It was really neat what they were doing with the books to accommodate kids. I also liked the toy room. We had some fun playing with all the toys before everyone else got there!
I thought this was a great trip to see what you can use in a special ed class and what is also avaibible to you as a teacher. The book project is a great idea and I hope it will help many struggling students. Mrs. White do you know of anything like this in ohio or cincinnati?
Anyone know what they did to the mice? i was intereseted in what they actually did...i love the fact that so many different devices can be modified for children of all abilities. Mice and toys and books are all amazing... I would love to see where technology will take us in a few years where many more things are going to become more accessable!
I went with the Monday night class. I am not sure what you all did but we got to tour the facility and talk about the different types of accomodations that they have in the center to help the kids. I thought it was interesting how they would use everyday items as accomodations. I knew they could do something like that, I guess my mind just does not think "outside the box" like that.
At work we donate to the United Way. I never really knew where the money went, but they said that some of the doantions goes to the bluegrass Technology Center. I was excited to know, that I could be helping their cause.
I thought this was a great experience! Although it took the whole time we were there to scan just one book :) It's amazing what is right in front of us and sometimes we never even know about it. One concern I had though was, I think I recall Debbie said this was a grant for the dolly parton book corp. That means it is for a select group of children, not only age but by community. Small communities such as mine still have these special needs children left out because they do not have dolly parton sponsers. I wish it could be available to all not just those with sponsers.
with the mice we first disassembled them then found the connections on the circuit board that controlled the left click button on the mouse. From there we had to sauder those two connections with some wire and the remaining wire we had to sauder a input jack. to get the input jack onto the mouse we had to drill a hole into the side of the mouse, using a drill press. We installed the input jack with the connections to the left click buttons. then we tested it. finally they have a huge yellow button that the children of need that plugs into the input jack that we installed and modded so that they could hit the big yellow button once, instead of using a double click of the left mouse button.
Mark, I never knew you were so smart. I am SO impressed!
thank you. Mrs.White. I was listening real good is all though.
I agree, this trip was a great experience. I had the opportunity to Crop/Rotate pictures and organize books with the high schoolers. Which if I may add they had very bad listening skills. I sat by two people that took pictures the whole time Debbie was explaining what we needed to do. I felt bad for her, because what she was trying to do could have been finished in a smaller amount of time. But overall I got to see a lot of the different books going toward the project and how there is a variety. The most common book that I seen was The Lion King though.
I agree, I wish I lived closer! I would love to volunteer at a place like that, and it really looked like they could use some extra hands. I believe that they will definitely grow and excel at what they are doing. It's a great place!
I have to agree as well, and I really liked the idea of having the books signed for those kids who are deaf because then that would get free books out to so many more children. I liked my part of the trip and book even though I didn't get to do that many books but I really like reading books whether it be to kids or just to myself :D lol I was really impressed with the system that they had set up there and am excited to see what they come out with next to further help children with any type of disability
I just wanted to say that I was really excited about our trip...I had Dr. Gassaway as an instructor at UK. She always talked about the Bluegrass Technology Center and showed us pictures of things that they do there. I never got to attend during her class, so I was happy that this class would be attending the center. It was also really great to see Dr. Gassaway...I had no idea she would be there but I was so happy to talk with her again. I plan to go an volunteer more time to the BTC. The field trip was a great experience and inspiring as well.
I had fun with the field trip actually, I felt like what was being done at this facility was amazing. How creative you know? I would love to go and volunteer some more.
I had so much fun on the field trip. I always learn so much more when im doing hands on things or going somewhere. I feel like this is a great program!! I will volunteer in the future!
I really liked the field trip. I thought it was a great experience to get to help out and volunteer. I think it is great what they are doing.
