Your story

I think it would be awesome to hear everyone's story. Why did you go into special education? I decided I wanted to go into special education for a few reasons. The first reason was my roommate my freshman year of college. She has a brother with down syndrome, and I realized how bad I would love to help him and be around him all the time. I really enjoyed his company and thought he was a great person. Second reason was my job as santa's helper, (a crazy job by the way, do not ever do it!!!!) A group of special ed students came in to see santa, and seeing the smiles on their faces as they got to see santa made me so happy and I would love to do that for them everyday. Third reason is my current roommate, she has twin brothers that are suffering from many problems, mostly developmental problems and are having a very hard time in school. The students are making fun of them and they are falling behind in their classes because the teachers do not want to put them in special ed because they have not been diagnosed with an actual name for their problems yet. I would love to be a person helping these kids with their problems and I would love to put a smile on their faces and let them know everything will be okay and they are just as special as any other kid. Sorry this post was so long and maybe a little confusing, just wanted to tell my story.

Well for me going into special education was brought on by my major. I am a communication disorders major and I worked with a local Speech pathologist for a few weeks. While working with her I realized how closely related speech and special education was since many students are not able to apply for speech without another disorder (usually autism or down syndrome). After working there I realized how much i enjoyed working with those children and decided to minor in Special Education to gain more knowledge in the field!

When I first started college, I was an undeclared major. At first, I thought I wanted to do psychology. I have always known that I wanted to help children, so I researched child psychology and school psychology. I wasn't happy with this though because I didn't feel that I would really be working with a large group of kids. Everyone I knew started telling me that I should consider teaching. I had been teaching at my church for a long time, but I had never thought about having it as a career. That fall, I took my first education class and I have been hooked ever since! I feel in my heart that education is where I am supposed to be, and I have always felt a connection with young children. It doesn't matter to me if I teach special education or elementary education as long as I am helping children learn and be successful in their young lives. My fiance has a little sister who is in special education. She has a learning disability. I have seen how much trouble she has had in school because regular ed. (and one special ed. teacher - believe it or not!) teachers have not taken the time to help her. This angers me and makes me want to make a difference. These are children that especially need someone to help them through, and I would feel privileged to teach to special education students. I have a large place in my heart for all of them.

Special education has been part of my life for several years. I drive a school bus and sometimes I drive the special needs bus. These children have special needs, but they are children who need the same guidance and instruction as regular ed students. They also accept you for you.
