MLU Discussion from 8.24.08

In all retrospect, I have been trying to figure out all week how get'em was an included part of the language analysis we did. I understand how contractions are counted, but I do not see how get'em can be counted. How can it be counted when it is more of a slangterm than anthing? Even when analyizing a child's language does slang count? Does anyone have an idea to help me figure out how to count this word?

When we are counting we need to think about "what" we are looking for to count. What is it that the child says has meaning.

When a child says "get 'em." Both of those two units have meaning. One is an action, telling what to do. The second is communicating what it is the person is to obtain.

In the case of fillers such as, "oh" or "um" there is no MEANING. The child is just making a sound while they are thinking of what to say.

Here is another website with some "rules." They fit with what we have on Blackboard for our rules as well.
