SCEC

This past Tuesday, I went to my first SCEC (Student Council for Exceptional Children) meeting and joined as a member. I have always wanted to join SCEC, but the meetings were always during my class times. This year, I was able to join! When I went to the meeting though, I was surprised to see only about 10-15 people there! There are so many education majors here at EKU, and I expected to see the room filled up. All that the SCEC asks for is that you have a love for exceptional children, as I think all of us do. So if you are interested in joining a group of students who share a love for exceptional children and want to help support them, then please consider joining this group. The officers were very nice, and they discussed fundraisers that they would like us to participate in to raise money for exceptional children. We are currently selling wrapping paper and other holiday items from a book to raise money. If you are a commuter student like I am, I know how difficult it is when you want to participate in a group, but you are never on campus when they meet or do things! The SCEC only meets once a month, so it won't take a lot of your time. This group supports a great cause...so if you are looking for a group to join or just want to be able to help children, please consider joining SCEC. I am really happy I did!

I'm so happy you're interested in joining! I just joined, so I'm pretty new to the information myself. I know that we meet once a month. Dues are only $5, and t-shirts are $10 if you want one. I found out about the first meeting through those daily email EKU sends us. We gave the officers our names and e-mails at the meeting, and we're supposed to recieve more information on Bb about SCEC soon. For more information, you can contact the SCEC president Whitney Cornwell (I think it's Whitney_cornwell@eku.edu) or the advisors (Megan Purcell and Beth Pruitt) and I'm sure they could give you all the info you need! I hope this helps :-)

This sounds like it could be a good group to get involed with. I have one question that's not been answered yet.. What does the group do other than raise money? Do they interact with children or anything? Thanks.

Least year in my SED class the teacher gave bonus points for joining, then bonus points for every meeting that we went to. I never got to go because of my schedule, and I hadn't looked this year to see their schedule. My teacher did speack highly of it though.

This is the first year I have joined, and I have only been to one meeting, so I'm sorry I can't really answer a lot of your questions because I honestly don't know. The officers said they are trying to put the members on Bb so that we will know more about what is going on, but until then, I'm not sure about the schedule or anything. What I can tell you is what happened at the first meeting: we gave them our e-mail information, some members signed up for an "up til dawn" fundraiser (I'm not sure what this is), we discussed making "autism bracelets" to raise awareness, we discussed ideas we could do for October which is Disability Awareness Month, such as setting up a booth on campus, and we received fundraiser books in which half the proceeds go to Crusade for Children and half go to SCEC. I will contact one of the officers this week and see when Bb will be set up for us...then I will hopefully be able to answer your questions based on the information they post about SCEC. I will let you all know more information about SCEC as soon as I find out. Thank you for your interest, I hope to see you all at the meeting next month!

I have been looking to join this group for a while now but was concerned about my schedule. I commute as well and work so it is hard for me to participate in activities off campus. I am really glad you informed me that this group only meets once a month! I will definately join!

I think this group sounds really great, do they always meet the same night once a month or rotated around for those of us taking night classes?

Please give me more info! I have wanted to join for 2 years now, but, like you said, the meeting times were never good for me. Maybe you should just bring some stuff to class or give some more information in class, looks like a lot of people are interested!:-)
